“The best thing about bossa nova is that it brought back some of the feel and structure of the bossa nova from the past,” Gilberto says. “I think the best music always comes from the past. I think you should try to find something that’s very old, and find out what makes it so good, and in the case of bossa nova, it’s the old rhythms and the old feeling. “We’re still divided into two camps,” Gilberto acknowledges. “The people who are followers of the music are the real bossa nova people. They’re called baião. And the new generation, they love the Bossa Nova but they don’t listen to the old records. They’re the generation of the ‘Sou da Bahia’, who don’t know, they don’t listen to old music.”
By the 1980s, Gilberto had shed his bossa nova moniker and was making jazz his primary focus. After a falling out with his long-time producer, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gilberto took over the reins as the producer of his own albums.
But Gilberto and Jobim were looking to expand the Brazilian sound beyond jazz. They founded Companhia Nacional de Discos (CND), a label they developed to create a distinctive Brazilian sound. It was the first successful attempt to generate a popular music genre that had been limited to jazz and bossa nova.
